Films by Volker Schlöndorff, Hong Sangsoo and Sabu Announced For Berlinale 67

The good news from today's announcement of ten additional main slate titles for the 67th Berlin Film Festival is that nine of them, included the five films competing for the bears, are world premieres. These include new works by festival favorites Hong Sangsoo, Sabu, Thomas Arslan and Volker Schlöndorff. I wouldn't be surprised if Schlöndorff, a key member of the New German Cinema of the 1970s, is also announced as this year's Lifetime Achievement awardee, considering that the Berlinale has recently liked to keep the honorary Golden Bear "in the family," so to speak (Michael Ballhaus and Wim Wenders are the two most recent recipients).

Danny Boyle's "Trainspotting" sequel, which reunites much of the cast of the 1997 cult classic and shows at the festival in its international premiere, and the WP of James Mangold's "Logan," headed by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, promise to be among the festival's splashiest titles. Both films will be screened out-of-competition.
